Neuseeland hat als eines der wenigen Länder der Erde gleich zwei Nationalhymnen. Dies sind "God Defend New Zealand" und die britische "God Save The Queen"-Hymne. Letztere ist noch ein Relikt (wie der Union Jack in der Nationalflagge) aus der britischen Kolonialzeit und noch heute ist Neuseeland bekanntlich Mitglied im Commonwealth of Nations.
God Defend New Zealand wird allerdings mittlerweile bevorzugt. Die Melodie komponierte John Joseph Wood (1849-1934), der Text dieses Liedes stammt von Thomas Bracken (1843-1898). Meistens wird nur die erste Strophe gesungen, zuerst in Maori dann auf Englisch.
